Smaller growing evergreens have a place in every garden, and when one is as beautiful and special as the Feelin’ Blue Himalayan Cedar, you might well want two. With its soft needles in the perfect shade of silver blue, covering branches that arch and then fall, just seeing this tree will take your blues away. It naturally forms a unique mound of arching branches, reaching no more than three feet tall and yet spreading widely up to six feet or more across.
The ordinary Himalayan Cedar is seen in older gardens, where it grows into a tall tree that can be 100 feet tall and with a 10 foot thick trunk – far too large for any but the biggest garden. However, it has beautiful soft needles that cover the slender stems, and even in wild trees these can be bluish-green in color. By careful selection, that leaf color has been developed into a stunning steel blue that is the perfect complementary color to everything in your garden.
Growing Feelin’ Blue Deodar Cedar Trees
When you order a Feelin’ Blue Deodar Cedar from The Tree Center, it will come staked up with a central stem, giving you the option of also training it into a taller, weeping form. So placed in the front of taller shrubs, or staked to develop more height, this evergreen will make a spectacular accent in any bed, or as part of the foundation planting around the house. Planted at the top of a wall, or among rocks, it will cascade and flow down and around in the most charming ways. It will also live for years in a container, where it will soon form a beautiful widely-arching shrub that is decorative all year round. Your Feelin’ Blue Himalayan Cedar will grow all across the warmer parts of the country, from zone 6 to zone 9, so it is hardy to minus 10 degrees, yet it will also be happy in the warmth of Florida or California.
Planting Location
Plant your tree in a sunny location to develop the strongest blue coloring and avoid planting on low-lying damp areas where the soil is often wet. Otherwise your tree will be happy in all kinds of soil, even sandy soil and once established this is a very drought-resistant tree. It does not suffer from any serious pests and diseases, needs no trimming and only if you stake it upright will a little work be needed, attaching the main stem to your stake as the tree grows.
History and Origins of the Feelin’ Blue Deodar Cedar
As the name suggests, this tree grows wild in the Himalaya ranges, from Kashmir all the way into China. The Chinese have grown this tree in their parks and gardens for hundreds of years and the tree has been known in Europe and America since the early 19th century. The special form we are offering you was found at the well-known Monrovia Nursery, in Dayton, Oregon, by Cliff Comstock, one of their senior staff. What caught his eye was the intense blue color combined with this tree’s unique pendulous habit that had so much to offer in any garden.
Of course to grow such an unusual plant means taking stem pieces from properly identified parent plants and joining them to the roots of specially grown seedling Himalayan Cedars. It is not possible to grow this plant from seed, so don’t be fooled by plants labeled ‘Blue Cedar’ – they won’t be the true Feelin’ Blue Himalayan Cedar.
We went one step further and asked our expert growers to attach these trees to a stake as they grew and give them a central stem. This means that you have the option of continuing to stake your tree as high as you want, so that you can create a spectacular waterfall of blue that can be 6, 10, or even 20 feet tall, depending on how high you take the staking. Of course you can also leave your tree to grow as a smaller mound using the stake it will come attached to, and you won’t be disappointed in the beauty of this tree grown to its normal height of three or four feet. However you treat it, you will have a wonderful broad mound of foliage six feet across, with layer upon layer of pendulous branches, depending on how high you go.
