Everyone loves apples, but most people don’t try to grow their own, since they believe that the trees are large, take up a lot of room and need lots of care. That might have been true once, but it is not true anymore. Plant breeders have worked hard for us and produced a range of plants called Urban Apple Trees. As the name suggests, these trees have been developed for today’s small gardens, where full-sized apple trees would just be too big. They are a true breakthrough, that opens up apple growing at home to everyone, no matter how small their garden, or even if they have no garden at all, since these trees can also be grown in pots on a terrace or balcony.
The Tangy Green Urban Apple Tree is the perfect choice for those who love a sharp, tasty apple, with crisp flesh. As well as being good for eating, this apple is ideal for baking, since the extra acidity keeps your deserts and pies tasty and exciting. Although the tree is small, the fruit is full-sized and each tree bears a good crop, although taking up almost no space at all. This tree will only grow 8 – 10 feet tall, and no more than 2 feet wide, so it will fit into a very small space. In the past gardeners had to use advanced pruning techniques to keep trees small like this, but this new tree grows that way naturally, with no special methods needed.
Growing Tangy Green Urban Apple Trees
Finding such a small place in even the tiniest garden is easy. Anywhere in the sun is an ideal spot for your Tangy Green Urban Apple Tree, in any kind of soil that is well-drained. Avoid low-lying areas, where water may accumulate, or hollows, where late frost may damage the blossoms. This tree is hardy throughout zone 4, so it will grow in cold areas, as well as growing well all the way through zone 8, which means that almost everywhere in the country you can enjoy these great trees, no matter how small your garden is.
Maximizing Your Harvest
If you already have apple trees, including Crab Apples, growing in your garden, or with neighbors, then you can plant just one of these trees. However, if you have no other apple trees around, or if you like more variety on the table, we recommend you plant another tree – such as the Blushing Delight Urban Apple Tree, or the Tasty Red Urban Apple Tree, so that all your trees will produce the biggest possible harvest.
After all, with trees that are so narrow, you can plant a whole row, placing the trees just 3 feet apart, and have a mini-orchard right in your garden. A row of these trees is a great way to make a novel hedge, separating one part of your garden from another, or lining a path or driveway. They also make great specimens spaced out more widely as accents in your garden – beautiful and useful at the same time – what more can we ask of our garden plants?
Growing in a Pot or Container
To grow your Tangy Green Urban Apple in a container, choose a large pot 18-24 inches across and make sure it has several drainage holes. Use any potting soil designed for outdoor planters. Water thoroughly each time you water, so that some water flows from the drainage holes and do not place the pot in a saucer. Let the top inch of soil become dry before watering again.
History and Origins of the Tangy Green Urban Apple
‘Tangy Green’ is one of the Urban Apple Tree range, developed in the early part of this century by Dr. Jaroslav Tupy, head of the Institute of Experimental Botany, Prague, in the Czech Republic. He carried out years of extensive breeding to produce a really new kind of apple that makes it possible for anyone to successfully grow apples in the smallest gardens. These are special trees, so cheaper varieties will not be anything like the Tangy Green Urban Apple Tree at all, and will only be a huge disappointment to you.
